Clematis Arctic Queen, Clematis 'Arctic Queen™' PP#9,362, is a new cultivar that should be known as 'The Queen of the Doubles', instead of, as clematis are often referred to, as 'The Queen of the Vines'. Arctic Queen' has the strongest habit of any double clematis and it is very free flowering. The creamy-white, fully double, 5" flowers are produced on both the old wood and current season's growth from May through August. Clematis 'Arctic Queen™' needs a supporting structure to grow properly but will also grow over large shrubs, over walls, cover stumps, and make perfect cover ups for unsightly service areas. Clematis is easy to grow in a rich, porous, alkaline soil with plenty of room for the roots to spread. Best performance is when the tops are in full sunlight and the roots are shaded, so apply a generous mulch or a shallow-rooted ground cover near the base of the vine. Very reliable performers once established; they take a season or two to get going. Groom this plant after first flowering by cutting back the top one-third to one-half of some stems.
