Red Sunset® starts off life with a pyramidal shape that quickly rounds out with age, sporting high-gloss, star-shaped leaves that turn the most amazing shades of tangerine-scarlet during autumn; it is an extremely showy specimen. This tree is red, red, red: red clustered flowers in spring; red winged samara (“helicopters”) and near-red branches and twigs. Grows faster than Norway and Sugar Maples, but slower than Silver Maple. Plant your ‘Red Sunsets’ in full sun, partial sun or partial shade in average well-drained soil. It is moderately drought-tolerant. A superb choice for lawn or street planting (but not near a sidewalk); locate it so you can see it from a window. Zones 4-8.
